Which amino acids occur in matcha?
Amino acids are nitrogen-containing organic compounds. Matcha contains free amino acids, including L-theanine, glutamate and arginine, as well as amino acids bound in proteins. The free fraction is relevant to tea flavor. L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid, so describing every amino acid in matcha as a protein building block is misleading.
The related terms describe different things: L-theanine is one compound, while amino acids are a broader chemical group. Caffeine and catechins are not amino acids.
How shading changes the leaf
Preharvest shading can increase theanine, but it is not a guarantee of a particular amount in a tin. A 2022 experiment with Fuding white tea plants compared two shade treatments with an open-air control. Shading increased theanine and caffeine while reducing epicatechin and epigallocatechin under those conditions.
This plant experiment supports a cultivation mechanism, not a universal multiplication factor or a fixed ceremonial-versus-culinary composition. Product comparisons need measured amounts on the same powder or serving basis.
Flavor is not a laboratory measurement
Glutamate and L-theanine contribute to the savory character called umami. Receptor research shows that L-theanine can activate T1R1 + T1R3. That finding concerns taste signaling, not a guarantee of relaxation after drinking tea.
Flavor also reflects bitter and astringent compounds. A smooth taste, green color or lack of dryness cannot quantify amino acids or prove a health advantage.
What human studies establish
A small whole-matcha trial in young adults found differences in selected attention and emotion-perception tests, but not the other tests. Because the intervention contained caffeine, theanine and other constituents together, it could not assign the outcome to amino acids alone.
The cited studies do not establish that amino acids slow caffeine absorption, deliver four to six hours of steady energy, prevent jitters or strengthen immunity. Matcha still contains caffeine; sensory quality and clinical effectiveness are separate questions.
Comparing an amino acid analysis
Ask whether a result measures free amino acids or includes amino acids released from proteins during analysis. Report the named compounds, units and tested lot. A total amino acid result and an L-theanine result answer different questions; neither should be substituted for the other when comparing powders.
Reading the attention trial in context
The two-week trial enrolled 42 people aged 25 to 34 and used 2 g of matcha daily. Researchers induced mild stress with the Uchida-Kraepelin test before assessing several cognitive functions. Faster Stroop responses and more correct emotion-perception hits were specific outcomes, not a general improvement in every task. The powder dose describes that experiment; it is not a recommended amino acid dose.
