What Pesticide Residue in Matcha means
Pesticide residues are traces associated with pesticide use that may remain on or in food. Matcha is consumed as dispersed leaf powder rather than an infusion whose leaves are discarded. This matters when selecting a relevant sample and exposure assessment; it does not establish that a particular product is unsafe.
Assess concentration and amount consumed. Whole-leaf consumption is not itself a numerical absorbed-dose estimate, nor proof that all substances are absorbed in the same way.
What an MRL does and does not say
The European Commission defines a maximum residue level as the highest level legally tolerated in or on food or feed when pesticides are applied correctly under Good Agricultural Practice. It is a food-concentration limit, not interchangeable with a health-based daily intake value. Do not compare the two as though they share units.
For the EU, consult the Commission’s MRL database for the substance, food category and rules applicable to the transaction. This guidance was checked on 8 September 2026. No single number here is offered as the limit for all pesticides in matcha; an EU compliance conclusion should not automatically be copied to Japan or another market.
Compliance is important but does not mean absolute zero risk. Finding a trace alone does not prove harm. Interpretation requires the substance, concentration, limit, measurement uncertainty and an appropriate exposure assessment.
Use a suitable analytical method
The Commission’s SANTE 11312/2021 v2026 guidance covers sample traceability, extraction, chromatographic measurement, identification, reporting and uncertainty. It supports validity of official-control and exposure-assessment results.
Gas or liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry can be used. The laboratory must demonstrate performance for the analytes and sample matrix. Claiming to test hundreds of pesticides is not enough. A powder result and a brewed-liquid result are not interchangeable measurements.
How to read a certificate of analysis
Match the lot or sample identifier to the supplied product. Check sampling and analysis dates, laboratory identity and relevant accreditation scope. Read the analytes, method, units and quantification limits. Identify which market and limit were used for any pass or fail statement and how uncertainty was handled.
A non-detect or below-quantification result is qualified by method capability and substances tested. It does not mean every conceivable pesticide is absent. A report on another lot may describe supplier controls, but is not a test of the package in your hand.
Avoid price and organic shortcuts
Do not diagnose residue levels from color, flavor, origin or price. Certification concerns compliance with production rules; testing measures named substances in a sample. Neither should be summarized as a universal zero-residue guarantee.
