Tongren’s documented matcha connection
Tongren is in Guizhou Province, China. Unlike a locality linked to matcha only through a general tea-growing tradition, it has directly reported matcha businesses and international markets. Guizhou’s official English-language portal carries reports on the city’s matcha industry, including an interview with its mayor and an account of products marketed by Guicha Group. These reports document commercial activity rather than independently testing product quality.
A dated sales figure, not a timeless output total
A report published on 26 March 2024 quotes mayor Mu Rongkun saying that Tongren’s products, including matcha powder, had reached more than 40 overseas countries and regions, with sales exceeding 1,000 metric tons in 2023. Preserve that wording and year: it is a reported sales measure in a city-level account. It should not be converted into an undated annual factory output, a production capacity or a comparison with Japan’s entire tea industry.
Exports are another measure
A separate official-portal report dated 12 May 2025 says exports had approached 100 tons by the first quarter of 2025. It also reports matcha products reaching domestic cities and international markets in 2024. Those statements help establish commercial activity but do not provide interchangeable denominators. Quarterly exports, full-year sales and installed processing capacity describe different things, so apparent numerical disagreement should not be resolved by simply choosing the largest figure.
Factories, products and the regional landscape
The May 2025 account identifies Guicha Group and mentions matcha chocolate, ice cream and cooperation with food and beverage businesses. The March 2024 report places Fanjing Mountain within the Wuling range and discusses plans to develop matcha raw-material gardens. These facts connect landscape, production and commerce without proving a single soil composition, elevation or climate for every tea garden. A county or individual factory statistic must keep its own location and reporting period.
Avoid importing historical processing into modern factories
The cited industry reports do not justify describing every modern operation as making dried tea cakes before grinding. Nor do they establish an unbroken local industrial process from the Song dynasty. When a supplier’s manufacturing method matters, request its actual raw-material, shading, heat-treatment, drying and milling specifications. Evidence that a city exports matcha confirms a product sector, not that all companies use the same machinery or make identical powders.
No single Tongren flavour is established
Neither unusually mellow nor unusually bitter is established here as a uniform regional matcha profile. These reports are industry accounts, not controlled comparative tastings. Colour, astringency and texture should be evaluated for a named batch at a stated preparation strength. Buyers can use Tongren as a provenance clue while checking leaf origin, manufacturing site, product specifications and relevant testing separately. Export reach is not, by itself, evidence of better flavour or organic certification.
