Tea Sommelier: Skills and Provider-Specific Training
A tea sommelier selects, tastes, and serves tea. Learn what the role involves and how to check provider-specific training and matcha expertise.Definition of Tea Sommelier
Tea Sommelier is a role focused on selecting, tasting, preparing, and serving tea, often with advice on food pairings and tea menus. Training and certificates come from individual education providers. The title alone does not identify one shared curriculum, an assessment standard, or expertise in every tea tradition.

What does a Tea Sommelier do?
A tea sommelier helps people choose, prepare and understand tea. Responsibilities can include evaluating samples, explaining processing and origins, planning a tea menu, recommending pairings and training staff to reproduce a recipe. The useful question is what the practitioner can demonstrate, not simply which title appears beside their name.
World Tea Academy describes its advanced sommelier training in terms of tea service, tasting and creating tea experiences. These are relevant skills, but the provider’s certificate should not be presented as a universal legal qualification for everyone who works with tea.
Training belongs to a named provider
As accessed on 8 September 2026, World Tea Academy’s published pathway specifies six core courses followed by seven required advanced courses. Completing only the seven advanced courses is not the full pathway. The core courses lead to its Certified Tea Specialist designation; the complete sequence leads to its Certified Tea Sommelier certificate.
These requirements belong to World Tea Academy. They do not establish a worldwide ladder in which every professional must progress through Specialist, Sommelier and Master in the same order. Other organizations may use different prerequisites, assessment methods and formats. Check the current handbook directly before enrolling.
How to evaluate a credential
Identify the awarding organization and exact certificate. Ask which courses and assessments were completed, including practical tasting or service work. Distinguish course attendance from passing an assessment, and broad tea education from training in a particular chanoyu school.
Ask how much hands-on work covered the category you need. This makes credentials comparable without dismissing either study or experience gained through working with producers and customers. A certificate documents education; it does not verify every origin, safety or quality claim made by its holder.
What matcha expertise looks like
A useful demonstration is a controlled comparison: identify the products, keep powder dose and water amount consistent, explain preparation, and describe aroma, bitterness, astringency, umami and texture separately. If the recipe changes, identify the change rather than attributing every difference to origin.
Distinguish what was tasted from what a producer disclosed. Taste cannot verify a farm address, an organic certificate, a pesticide result or a harvest date. Calling powder ceremonial does not establish a standard composition or qualify someone to teach every tea school’s procedures.
Working with a specialist
Give the specialist a concrete task: choosing tea for water-only service, improving an inconsistent latte or helping staff describe a menu accurately. Ask for preparation and sourcing notes another person can use. This turns knowledge into practical service without assuming that hiring a sommelier guarantees sales or repeat customers.
