Frequently asked questions
Bird & Blend Tea Co. sources its matcha exclusively from Japan, with its Pure Grade Ceremonial Matcha coming specifically from Uji in Kyoto Prefecture. The company partners with screened Japanese suppliers rather than operating farms itself, keeping its sourcing connected to traditional shading, harvesting, steaming, drying, and stone-milling methods.
Bird & Blend Tea Co. offers both pure ceremonial matcha and inventive flavoured matcha powders. Its flavoured collection retains an authentic Japanese matcha base and adds natural flavouring granules. Recorded varieties include Strawberries & Cream, Banana, Toffee Apple, Salted Caramel, and Blueberry & Acai Super Matcha.
Tea plants are shaded using tana for roughly three weeks before harvest. Young, tender leaves are picked during the spring harvest and steamed immediately to prevent oxidation. After drying, the leaves are ground into fine powder on traditional ishiusu stone mills, using a slow process intended to avoid heat damage to the tea’s flavour.
Bird & Blend’s Pure Grade Ceremonial Matcha is made from 100% Japanese matcha green tea powder. It forms the foundation of the company’s matcha collection and can be used for tea ceremonies or prepared in lattes. It is the pure alternative to the company’s dessert-inspired flavoured powders.
Founders Krisi Smith and Mike Turner initially established the business as Bluebird Tea Co., packing tea in their bedroom and selling it at local markets. In May 2018, the company officially rebranded as Bird & Blend Tea Co. The change marked a new stage in the growth and identity of the tea business.
